ELECTRIC SPACE HEATERS ARE BIG DOLLAR WASTERS
Electricity, per unit of energy (per million btu's), costs us about $27.00. The same unit of energy from natural gas or #6 fuel oil burned at the Central Heating Plant costs us only about $8.50. Atmospheric emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides are also significantly lower when we use UNH Heating Plant energy instead of electric space heaters.
A common problem with the use of electric space heaters is that they can actually make your area more uncomfortable. If the heat generated by the space heater "tricks" your thermostat into thinking that your room is warm, your normal heating system will shut off and you will be left with nothing but the electric space heater as a source of heat.
If you have to use an electric space heater to stay warm, please let the UNH Energy Office know. If we can help you find a way to solve your comfort problem without using the space heater, we can free up budget dollars for other areas (and reduce air pollution)
