Office equipment, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners and fax machines, makes up a significant portion of all commercial electric usage. ENERGY STAR office equipment is widely available and can provide a savings of 90% for some products. Overall, ENERGY STAR office products use about half the electricity of standard equipment. These products reduce wasted energy by automatically entering a low-power "sleep" mode when not in use. A computer in sleep mode consumes about 20% of the electricity that it does at full-power. Spending a large portion of time in low-power mode not only saves energy, but helps equipment run cooler and last longer.
