Water Supply System

The UNH owns and operates the Water Treatment Plant that provides water for the campus and the town of Durham.  The primary source of our water is the Oyster River.  A dam at the Water Treatment Plant creates a reservoir to store our water supply.  A well in Lee, owned by the town of Durham, supplements the water provided by the Oyster River.  The Lee well water is pumped into the distribution system, not the storage reservoir.

During periods of drought, water can be pumped from the Lamprey River to replenish supplies stored in our reservoir.  A pipeline runs from the Lamprey River on Packers Falls Road to our reservoir behind College Woods.  The pump at the Lamprey River can be activated by local fire departments to boost water pressure at fire hydrants located along the pipeline route.
